but I wanted to share this book review that I also added.

All New Square Foot Gardening (Paperback) by Mel Bartholomew

...anyone, anywhere can enjoy a Square Foot garden. Children, adults with limited mobility, even complete novices can achieve spectacular results.

I've rarely seen a more reader-friendly book! It comes complete with layout pages, very consise planting guides, even planting time tables for your area and the amount of time you can store your seeds! If you have never gardened before or started a garden that eventually left you frustrated, then this is the book for you! I just think that you should check your area for agricultural grade vermiculite before you buy the book. But once that little snafu is over, you are going to be amazed at how brilliant and easy this book makes successful gardening. I highly recommend this method for busy people and parents like myself. It is wonderfully easy to maintain, makes loads of produce, and looks very attractive. Two green thumbs way, way up.

It is devoted to the rules of American English and I am enjoying being part of the community. At first I thought "What relevance can we make of these rules in a climate that seems bent on flaunting them?" Kwan skipping season to go to college - wow!

This headline jumped out at me this morning. Strange because so many headlines about sporting figures are there, but not of interest.

(I will digress for a moment, though, and comment that I followed a series of American news items about an athlete with a broken leg. There was huge attention - the story ran for days and it wan't until I read what must have been about the fifth day's story that I realised it was a horse!! - I thought it must be a football player!!)

There are stories about individual athletes and their performances or lack of, about coaches, about teams. Many of these people are treated in the news items as if they are celebrities and the whole industry seems to be surrounded with media magic.

So it is attention-grabbing for me to read about a person putting their sporting career on hold to attend college - what give up that huge commitment, that magic status to go to college? What has college to offer in comparison?

I'm off to investigate participation in two blogging endeavours -

Thanks to Cognitive Daily for the article Is "Dumb Jock" an accurate stereotype? While you pose the question

with more and more studies demonstrating that athletic participation is associated with higher academic performance, why does the stereotype persist?

I suspect that maybe you are generalising too far. I grew up with the stereotype - either dumb jock or academic brain, but not both. I live in a household of males, all of whom love their sport and both sons play football, basketball and cricket. While I know that there are many sporting activities particularly athletics where there is no longer any dumb jock behaviour, I see it persisting in the football rooms still. Any announcement after a game of football was accompanied by skulling (is that how you spell it?), last time I attended. I was mortified to see it still existed. Does success on a football field still depend on that masculine, blokey testosterone fuelled atmosphere?

If the structure of your speech involves ”Tell them what you are going to say, say it and tell them what you just said…” then the Introduction, Body and Conclusion are vital. But just as crucial, are the links between those parts - the bridging. They provide another opportunity to remind the audience of your message, and to link the parts together seamlessly. the Moon landing - stuff of legends

We need our myths and legends. We have the little girl in the red hood and the big bad wolf, and we have the moon landing. It has become the stuff of legend, too - pride in our achievements as a race. Look at the language used in it - "one small step ..." suitable to any myth or legend.

My sons listen to a song that says "Space may be the final frontier/but it's made in a Hollywood basement ..." More vivid language and another myth about the moon landing - an urban myth.

And now to add to this whole melting pot, the news:

NASA can't find original tape of moon landing

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. government has misplaced the original recording of the first moon landing, including astronaut Neil Armstrong's famous "one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind,"

From a Librarian's point of view this is very sad. What were they thinking - stuff of myth and they don't even know where it is!! and why didn't they put it on microfiche and store it properly? We must preserve our history! We must preserve out mythology!

After 40+ years of research, one might think that debate about media violence effects would be over. An historical examination of the research reveals that debate concerning whether such exposure is a significant risk factor for aggressive and violent behavior should have been over years ago (Bushman & Anderson, 2001).

Four types of media violence studies provide converging evidence of such effects: laboratory experiments, field experiments, cross-sectional correlation studies, and longitudinal studies (Anderson & Bushman, 2002a; Bushman & Huesmann, 2000).

But the development of a new genre—electronic video games—reinvigorated the debate.

Two features of video games fuel renewed interest by researchers, public policy makers, and the general public. First, the active role required by video games is a double-edged sword. It helps educational video games be excellent teaching tools for motivational and learning process reasons. But, it also may make violent video games even more hazardous than violent television or cinema. Second, the arrival of a new generation of ultraviolent video games beginning in the early 1990s and continuing unabated to the present resulted in large numbers of children and youths actively participating in entertainment violence that went way beyond anything available to them on television or in movies. Recent video games reward players for killing innocent bystanders, police, and prostitutes, using a wide range of weapons including guns, knives, flame throwers, swords, baseball bats, cars, hands, and feet.

Some include cut scenes (i.e., brief movie clips supposedly designed to move the story forward) of strippers. In some, the player assumes the role of hero, whereas in others the player is a criminal. Read on ...

I have to add, though, that much of what is written on time management assumes that we have a measure of control over our time. For those of us who work in service professions and/or choose to support families, there is a whole new dimension. We have to be "on call," so to speak, be able to drop everything for someone else's priorities. I find this stressful at times- have to remind myself of my priorities, very strongly sometimes. I must say that something a friend said recently keeps echoing in my head. She is in recruitment and said that one of the most important skills that employers are looking for today is the ability to prioritize tasks, and to be able to do it many times during the day. I hope this article gives you the ground rules to succeed in your time, (or is it task?) management.

Perhaps the greatest problem that people have today is "time poverty." Working people have too much to do and too little time for their personal lives. Most people feel overwhelmed by responsibilities and activities, and the harder they work, the further behind they feel. Instead of clearly deciding what you want to do, you continually react to what is happening around you. Pretty soon, you lose all sense of control. You feel that your life is running you, rather than you running your life.

You have to evaluate your activities in the light of what is really important to you. You must master your time rather than becoming a slave to the demands of a constant flow of events. I'm fascinated with marketing and the techniques used. I'm also excited by the changes that are occurring with technology, and the way we are adapting to them, so the following piece caught my attention, and all I can say is - it speaks for itself ..

IMAGINE YOU'RE WATCHING "LORD OF the Rings." Aragorn, fresh from slaying a host of orcs single-handedly, sits down and has a nice, refreshing Pepsi.

You can imagine the reaction of the audience, especially those fanatics who brought their dog-eared copies of the trilogy to check for discrepancies.Product placement, while popular in the movie industry, simply doesn't work with every movie.

The same goes for in-game ads, currently touted as a way for video game developers to mitigate the rapidly skyrocketing costs of producing the next big thing--Halo 2 cost $20 million to produce--by providing another revenue stream beyond sales.

The problem is, much like movies, in-game ads simply can't be placed in every game; fantasy, and sometimes even sci-fi settings, make product placement impractical and even offensive to gamers--and gamers are a constituency that get angry easily.

It would be problematic to include modern products or advertisement in-game in many of the top 20 games by sales as of mid-March--including Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, Metriod Prime: The Hunters, and Animal Crossing: Wild World.

On everyone's mind this year: it was only a matter of time before the internet changed TV in a way more profound than color or cable. That kind of disruption calls for a VC road map...

The entertainment industry managed to ignore the net for a decade. Only 250 miles apart, Hollywood and Silicon Valley might as well have been on different planets. Happy with their structural oligopoly, TV networks resisted change, and (just as buyers and sellers keep each other coming back to eBay) the talent and the audiences stayed loyal to the networks.

I also read a piece recently about how a child did not discriminate between the screens in his life - the television, the computer, the screen in the player in the back seat of his parent's car, and his game player. I look forward to seeing who manages to integrate the lot into one device and what that device will look like and how it will operate. At the moment I sit at a desk to compute and lounge to watch TV (though rarely - partly because I cannot stand watching someone else flipping throug the channels. If TV becomes more interactive, will it become increaingly a solitary activity? I doubt it somehow. I watch my children sharing games and television, and they seem to be able to work it out. )

I guess it is similar to the juggling between books and the internet. Location , portability and interactivity are all aspects that need to be ironed out.

Maybe it's because, on the whole, they are all trying to be the best they can at what they do, at a time of great change.

Could that be said for all professions? Probably - especially those who choose to share experiences.

Anyway the blogosphere is a great place to be a librarian and it is also a pleasure to provide pages where a librarian might trip over an idea that will work for them as they try to be the best they can at what they do.

Budget to boost unis, research: report

Next week's federal budget is expected to contain millions of dollars in extra funding for universities to build facilities and bolster research.More than $100 million will be pumped into an Australian National University refurbishment while health and medical research will receive the single biggest injection of public funds since 1999.

After all much of our economy depends on innovation and research.

Let's hope they also put money into training more doctors!

CHICAGO - Middle-aged, white Americans are much sicker than their counterparts in England, startling new research shows, despite U.S. health care spending per person that's more than double what England spends.

To my father and his generation, anyone who was larger was admired. "Fine figure of a woman" they would say. Because to them poverty meant being thin - not enough to eat - an outward sign of lack of success. Bad association - fat was prosperity. Fat was good. There was too much physical work back then for anyone to be obese unless there was something wrong.

Then there was the idea of the English upper class having the money to be thin. I suspect that's where the Americans found the concept for their high society of "never too rich, or too thin".

Yet somehow in this world where wealth and sloth seem to be synonymous for a huge majority and the ideal for so many no matter what "class", we seem to have lost that old connection. Hence this trend in our American based (?) society towards prosperity, complacency and obesity.

Will we turn it around?

It's a good feeling to have the ITC Cyber Group straightened out and with the foundations for successful operation established. We have a group where we can store documents and where we can chat and share ideas. It will also be useful for submitting writing for evaluation - one way to develop communication skills. We can then also use the internet to practice spoken word assignments and to have meetings and chat in another way. Website is now up at http://www.itccyberinternational.org. Basic so far but will grow. This is a group for ITC members who cannot attend meetings. There is also an ezine to which non-members can subscribe. I will upload issues to the website in the next few days and set up subscription from there. At the moment, you can just send an email to me.

A news headline today announces Childish behaviour a road hazard: NRMA.

Ooh goodie, more on road rage!!

But no, it continues “Parent drivers are being driven to distraction by the silly backseat antics of their kids, according to new research.”

Oh is that all? Are you a parent? Were you a child once? Had we not noticed this phenomenon?

Ok maybe we needed to be reminded of the dangers. Or maybe we need to be reminded to be tolerant. Is that the problem today? We’ve forgotten tolerance? Tolerance is not trendy. This is the me generation still is it? And my anger will be vented? Therefore the massive increase, not to mention dangers involved, in road rage. And therefore the need to remind us to be tolerant of our children – to remind us not to be distracted by their antics in the car, and maybe to take some time to be prepared so we don’t have the antics in the first place. Hope it works.

Just when I was revelling in the little snippets coming my way that said chocolate was good for hearts - especially the dark variety, (of chocolate that is ...) and that there were antioxidants there as well, I come across this little gem ...

What a wet blanket to throw over my hopes for the benefits of chocolate.

But then I hearken back to late teens when I was melodramatically "depressed" over some cad, and decided that other people used alcohol to "drown their sorrows" and that was what I could do too. Went out and bought a bottle of whisky. Didn't work, did it? Made the miseries worse.

Further experimentation with alcohol made me come to the conclusion that whatever crutch you were using was just that - a support to whatever you were feeling at the time - happy, and the alcohol made you happier, sad and you drowned in it. So ... maybe the same applies to chocolate.

Ah well - back to the attempts (mostly successful!) at moderation.

I was reading an article from Jennifer Louden recently, where she commented on the names for … God, the divine being, Gaia….. and remarked that when she met this being she would first ask what happened to all the odd socks and then ask for the correct name. I suspect the answer would suggest that, we know this being, its existence and its reality. Why bother about a name so much? We humans need to have a name for things, and, I have been thinking, a lot of it is due to the need to communicate. Each language and each culture has a different name for horse, snow, beans – and so for the being. Fascinating stuff , language – and communication.

Fear of public speaking

Is public speaking your number one fear?

It is for a lot of people.

I suffer from nerves, but have learnt to use them to create passion and to keep my mind focused.

But in writing an article recently on the causes of fear of public speaking, I had to include the fact that the fear, or at least aversion, runs in families.

This was something I had pointed out to me many years ago. It made me think about my situation and brought back memories. My grandfather and aunt taught “elocution” many years ago, and I heard stories about my grandfather reciting poetry at concerts and special events, so the concept of standing in front of an audience wasn’t alien to me – hence the lack of fear.

And I assume that the opposite occurs. If children see their parents avoiding public speaking, and expressing fear and lack of confidence, then they will take on the same behaviour.

Over the years of practice and research, I have learned there are strategies that overcome the fear and the nerves and I practice the ones that work for my situation, and train in the ones that apply to each individual case. We went to the movies last night (have you seen Walk the Line? – I got bored in places and yet the lasting impressions today are powerful) and during the trailers we saw the ad for a car company using the theme “OK-breaking the mould". We love ads that challenge the brain a bit. Normally my comment is “Yes but will you remember what the product was?” and usually we don’t. But this time, I haven’t forgotten the flash of Honda. Was it because my son muttered, “Who would have thought – Honda?” Who knows, but long shall they reign these ads with a little bit of brain power involved.
